Frequently Asked Questions
What ages are recommended for this course?
This course is specifically geared towards ages 18 months to 4 years old, although it can be used for both younger babies and older children who are new to swimming.
Do I need to have any swimming experience?
You need to be comfortable in the water, and there are times when I recommend demonstrating simple skills for your child (blowing bubbles, putting your face in the water, floating on your back) But you do not need extensive swimming or teaching experience to successfully teach your child to swim.
Do I need to be a parent to purchase the course?
No! Any caregiver who plans to teach a child they know well can use the course. Grandparents, Aunts & uncles, Nannies & Foster parents are perfect examples of caregivers. People who plan to teach other children like a swim school should purchase the Instructor pass.
What if I only have an above ground pool?
While your child will get the most out of lessons if they cannot touch the bottom, you can teach in any pool or lake. I have a section with tips for above ground pool users.
My pool is cold, can I still teach my child to swim in it?
Anything above 82 and below 92 will be just fine for short, structured lessons for kids 1 & up. For infants, the water should be a little warmer, but is ok around 86.
Can I teach lessons to my child in a public pool?
Most public pools allow parents or guardians/caregivers to teach their own children to swim. Some pools that offer swim lessons have strict regulations on this for either safety reasons or to promote their own lesson program. Check with your pool to make sure!
My child has special needs and/or considerations, will this course be appropriate for them?
I have used this curriculum to teach children of all abilities. I believe in meeting children where they are, and this course is designed to be the framework for you to tailor your lessons to your childs exact needs, and is therefore perfect curriculum for all children!
